We try to target volunteers of all ages and abilities. An interest in or experience of nature and conservation is advantageous but not as important as enthusiasm and desire to make a positive contribution to the work we do. In return we provide the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of conservation and community projects, a training budget and a commitment to training and development. We have a wide range of volunteering roles from specialised ecology assistants to practical conservation volunteers to admin and IT roles so we would not solely be interested in targeting ecology or environmental studies students but anyone with an interest in what we do. We work to support children that live in prison under terrible circumstances. We want to offer these children a better future by giving them the opportunity to develop themselves. Our work is aimed at reintegrating children into society. In order to successfully return to schools, families and neighbourhoods, the children need hope and self confidence as well as the right social and practical skills. We therefore start up activities that stimulate their creative abilities. Besides the fact that this often is the only thing they can do in the prison, the creation of art is a great means to teach them skills. At the moment we work in South Africa, Surinam, and Colombia and have a pilot project in Malawi. In the Netherlands there are four professionals and about 20 active volunteers In the Netherlands office we are looking for volunteers for; Funding, research, policy and communication.

We link people with turtle sites in ways that directly support protection efforts, while increasing resources in communities to help residents thrive and value sea turtles in their environment. We work with community-based organizations working at key turtle sites to promote responsible tourism that will allow the organizations to expand their work and bring alternative sources of income to communities where poaching and fishing are common practice. Each project is different, but volunteering on a sea turtle conservation project usually involves patrolling the nesting beach with a group of researchers and other volunteers. When the group finds a turtle, volunteers will help collect data and tag it and either hide the nest by moving it to a safe location or marking its location. Researchers collect data such as length and width of the shell, where it nested, its tag number, and its physical condition.
Patrols generally last 4 hours and run from 8 pm to midnight or midnight to 4 am. Many projects also have shifts in an egg hatchery, where the eggs are protected from poachers and animals. Other jobs can include maintaining the equipment, cleaning the beach of driftwood, debris, and trash, and participating in educational programs. At projects where most of the work is doing night patrols, volunteers generally have the daytime free to swim, explore the rainforest, visit local towns, or get to know the other volunteers and researchers.

To protect and nurture children and adolescents coming from all different family backgrounds and vulnerable situations, working to give them an independent future and helping them prepare for re-integration into a family situation by providing shelter, quality education, healthcare, sports, and cultural services. The placement of the volunteer in a specific job is decided by the volunteer selection coordinator, the director, and the volunteer. Much of this decision depends on the current needs of the program and the skills of the volunteer.

The job descriptions are as follows:

Educator: The most needed job is that of Educator/Caregiver. Educators supervise and implement the daily routine of the children (bathtime, meals, outdoor activities, games, hygiene, bedtime). This is an extremely intense that includes at least three 24 hour shifts per week with the children. Children are extremely challenging and it takes time to earn their respect. This position requires volunteers who speak an advanced level of Portuguese.

Educator: Our teenage houses are very different from our child centre. Educators at our teen houses work much more independently since the teenage houses are smaller and the teenagers are responsible for almost all activities around the house. We have brazilian educators who work in each house, but there are a few days each week when these educators are not there. Earning respect from the teenagers is difficult and takes time. Volunteers need to be outgoing, responsible, patient and loving in order to fill this position. On the other hand it is also necessary to be strict and maintain a level of discipline in the house. Teenagers often lack self-esteem and initiative to undertake activities outside the houses. Volunteers can play an important role here.

Teaching: Formal education (Math, English, Portuguese, Science, Reading, History, etc.), social education, and developing creative capacities (music, design, swimming) with the children and teenagers (music, design, swimming). Formal teching experience is appreciated for this position, but not required.

On-site Volunteer Coordinator: Assist new and other volunteers in getting acclimated in all aspects of the work by providing training, orientation and advice. Responsible for all logistics between the three centres and maintaining the weekly work schedule/tasks for all volunteers. This person is the main point of contact between the Brazilian employees and volunteers. This is a very hands on role and requires someone who is very organized.

Office Volunteer Coordinator: Main communicator between Casa Do Caminho and all prospective and incoming volunteers. Communicates via email and Skype with potential/incoming volunteers to interview, accept, receive all necessary documentation, and airport collection. This individual is responsible for providing incoming volunteers with all information and answer any questions that they may have as well as discuss suitable positions available at the time the person will be volunteering.

On-Site Health Care Coordinator: Responsible for monitoring the general daily health of the children at the main site and administering medications as needed. We have a medical room (Ambulatorio) on site which must be well stocked with basic medications and supplies at all times. It is the responsibility of the On-Site Heath Coordinator along with the daily Educators to take the proper measures should an accident or illness arise with one of the children. If you have ANY background of health care at all, please inform the Volunteer Coordinatoras this is an important role at Casa and it is always good to have a volunteer who knows the basics in this position.

Off-Site Medical Coordinator: Responsible for making all medical appointments and taking the children to all doctor, hospital, emergency rooms, and medical labs. This role is also responsible for finding new pro-bono doctors and dentists for our children.

Electrician: The complete electrics of all three houses need to be re-done as they are dangerous and costly. The current system is so poor that often rain fall causes power cuts and short circuits.

ICT specialist: We have recently obtained some PCs and are working to get internet for the main site at Casa do Caminho to improve education, management and marketing. Our donated computers are often older and require advancements, upkeep and solving urgent issues in our main office.

Maintenance Jobs and Carpentry: Mechanics, building, plumbing, painting, improving basic infrastructure of facilities, repairing doors/roofs, fences, playgrounds, etc. There is much work and improvements to be done at all three locations.

Organic Farming: Working Casa do Caminhos land, to provide vegetables and fruits for the three houses and educate the children about agriculture. Volunteers for this position must have farming/gardening experience.

Fundraising & Grant writing: National and international for the various projects at Casa do Caminho. Our director has a lot of information on how to raise funds. Our web designer is willing to support fundraisers with the building of a promotion websitee.

Language Center: We recently opened a language center in Rio de Janeiro. All of the proceeds for the language center go directly to Casa do Caminho. We need volunteers who can teach English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French to adults. Volunteers at the language school will also be responsible for administrative tasks.
